Performance band descriptions

Japanese Continuers Level

The typical performance in this band:

 

Band 6
  • initiates and sustains communication through the exchange of relevant ideas and information expressed appropriately
  • demonstrates an extensive knowledge of vocabulary and advanced structures
  • structures and sequences ideas and information consistently, logically and coherently
  • demonstrates an extensive understanding of the global meaning of written and spoken texts by identifying detail in complex sentences and by interpreting and evaluating ideas and information
  • demonstrates an excellent knowledge of the prescribed kanji and accurate use of script
  • writes detailed and accurate texts in various text types
Band 5
  • sustains communication through the exchange of relevant ideas and information, with occasional hesitation
  • demonstrates a thorough knowledge of vocabulary and advanced structures
  • structures and sequences ideas and information generally logically and coherently
  • demonstrates a global understanding of spoken and written texts by identifying most relevant details and by interpreting and evaluating information
  • demonstrates a very good knowledge of the prescribed kanji and script
  • writes clear logical texts with minor errors in various text types
Band 4
  • communicates orally through an exchange of relevant ideas with reasonable fluency
  • demonstrates a sound knowledge of vocabulary and advanced structures
  • demonstrates a good ability to structure and sequence ideas and information
  • demonstrates a global understanding and interpretation of spoken and written texts without identifying all relevant detail
  • demonstrates a good knowledge of the prescribed kanji and script
  • writes logical texts in various text types with some errors
Band 3
  • communicates orally with some relevant ideas but limited fluency
  • demonstrates a satisfactory working knowledge of vocabulary and syntax
  • demonstrates a limited ability to structure and sequence ideas and information
  • demonstrates the ability to comprehend isolated details in spoken and written forms
  • demonstrates the ability to read and write some of the prescribed kanji and script
Band 2
  • communicates orally with frequent use of anglicisms and English syntax
  • demonstrates knowledge of some basic vocabulary and grammar items
  • demonstrates the ability to read and write basic sentences
  • identifies minor details such as numbers and borrowed words in spoken and written text
  • reads a minimal range of kanji (ie numbers) in context
  • demonstrates an ability to write hiragana and some single katakana correctly
