Professional development

High-quality professional development (PD) helps teachers to continuously improve and maintain their teaching practice and develop their careers.

BOSTES presents a range of Quality Teaching Council (QTC) accredited training through hands-on workshops and online courses via BOSTES Learning.

BOSTES also coordinates a rigorous process of endorsing providers. More information about professional development providers is available on the Teacher Accreditation website.

NAPLAN Persuasive Writing online course

Gain insight into the NAPLAN persuasive writing paper marking process with this on-demand video-based course delivered via BOSTES Learning. In your own time, complete each of the 10 training units, which follow the marking criteria outlined in the Writing marking guide. Each unit concludes with an exercise to mark scripts which consolidate what you have learned.  Successful completion of the last assessment task unit contributes 12 hours of accredited training. Sit the course individually, work through it in small stage teams or faculty groups, or incorporate it into staff development events.

HSC Drama Practical Marking Day

Designed for teachers of HSC Drama, this accredited workshop focuses on the individual project in the areas of Critical Analysis, Design, Scriptwriting and Video Drama. Choose from one of these areas and learn from experienced senior markers how to apply the marking guidelines consistently. Using the 2016 benchmark projects, see the variety of ways in which students approach their individual projects. You will have an opportunity to ask questions of the senior markers and engage in discussion on critical components of the assessment process with colleagues from other schools across the state.

HSC Music Composition Practical Marking Day

Designed for teachers of HSC Music, this accredited workshop provides an opportunity to learn about the marking of Music compositions on location at the marking centre. Senior markers will go through the marking criteria using the 2016 benchmark compositions, and participants will have an opportunity to view, listen, discuss and ‘mark’ these works. Senior markers will also give advice on assisting students and on monitoring the development of their compositions.

HSC Textiles and Design Practical Marking Sessions

Designed for teachers of HSC Textiles and Design, this accredited workshop engages in hands-on simulation of the HSC marking process, most particularly the application of the marking kit to ensure valid and reliable results. Be exposed to projects across a range of focus areas, and learn how valid marking practices can be applied consistently when the techniques required for the various projects differ. Learn strategies for effectively monitoring students during the development of their major design project, and ask questions of experienced teachers and markers of Textiles and Design.

This accredited event is designed for teachers of HSC Visual Arts. Learn from experienced senior markers how to apply the marking guidelines consistently. You will be taken through a range of works from all of the expressive forms, and have an opportunity to see the variety of techniques that students employ in their bodies of work. You will have the opportunity to ask questions of the senior markers and engage in discussion on critical components of the assessment process with colleagues from other schools across the state.
